An indirect fire unit is a unit that has weapons that have a high-profile trajectory and greater range. These are opposed to direct fire units, which fire weapons with low-profile or linear trajectories. The group is primarily composed of stationary artillery installations, mobile artillery and Mobile Missile Launchers.
An indirect fire unit can hit land units, structures, floating units, hovering units and aircraft that have landed on the ground. Indirect fire units are better able to fire over obstacles like terrain and walls. Because it takes longer for projectiles to reach their targets, indirect fire units often miss when attacking moving enemies, but their projectiles typically do more damage than direct fire units. This makes them well-suited to destroying enemy defensive structures like point defenses.
