A tactical missile launcher (TML) is a unit that fires powerful missiles that deal high damage to a precision target. They are considered tactical because they have a "limited" range, as compared to strategic missile launchers. That being said, this will still cover most of the smaller 5x5 and 10x10 map sizes.

TMLs are primarily used to snipe key structures, particularly expensive ones, such as T2 mass extractors or T2 point defenses. All variants of TML have high range (namely, more than the point defensive structures) meaning the attacker risks very little in making their attack. If the enemy has these targets, it is worth investing in TML to threaten to take them down and catch up to them, especially as one TML can potentially hit multiple such targets.

The presence of TML forces the opponent to invest in Tactical missile defense units (TMD), at the cost of nearly 300 mass each, to defend these key structures or risk losing them and the advantages their structures are providing. TMD are an effective defense against individual tactical missiles, although is possible to overwhelm a TMD by simultaneously launching tactical missiles from many launchers, particularly non-Aeon TMD. Tactical missiles can also be stopped by shields, although due to the energy cost these are significantly more expensive to operate. Even if a shield is knocked down by a tactical missile launcher, the shield will typically regenerate before the launcher can fire another missile, resulting in a stalemate.

The TML structure dealing 6000 damage they can take out a T1 factory with one shot, while landing two hits can take out a T2 factory or stationary ACU, which is very important in Assassination or Commander Sniping. The launch site must be built first, and then each missile must be built, as with strategic missile launchers. Because each missile has a cost it is primarily worth firing at targets that cost more than about 200 mass to rebuild. Due to the TML's large range they can very quickly control a large amount of the map without having to divert units to that location, making them ideal for controlling faraway mass deposits.

Note that the Aeon version, Cybran version and UEF version of Strategic Missile Submarines are also tactical missile launchers because they fire tactical missiles as well as nuclear missiles.
