The units within Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance have many abilities and roles in combat theaters that may not readily be seen or properly described. The tables below can aid new players to understand these capabilities for each faction and allow seasoned players to develop new strategies. The information presented here is for Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance v3599 in skirmish or multiplayer games (not campaign).

There are four global categories namely; Special Abilities, Intel/Counter-Intel, Economy, and Combat. Each one is explained is the subsequent sections.


Terminology Edit

Within this guide there is a number of terms used which are explained below in alphabetical order.

Some units require an enhancement to be installed or two units need to work together to perform a specified function. This is noted by the COMBO: tag and identifies the unit and enhancement needed or the two units that need to work together.

Some units have limited abilities, but do have a role in a specific case. This is noted by * followed by a brief explanation. Each of these cases is described in more detail below.

  • Active When Landed: The unit’s offensive/defensive ability is still active when landed
  • Aircraft Only except Air Transports: The unit can assist/repair/transport aircraft only, but cannot do the same for T1-3 Air Transports or the Aeon T2 Guided Missile
  • Cannot Transport ACU & SCU: The T1 Air Transport for all factions cannot transport an Armored Command Unit (ACU) or a Support Command Unit (SCU). This feature is only present when playing the campaigns
  • Destroy Base Station: The unit cannot be directly destroyed, instead it is dependent on another unit to remain operational in order for itself to be operational
  • Does not appear anywhere else: To ensure the guide includes all units, these units are placed specifically in the Vision subcategory of the Intel/Counter-Intel section to ensure they are listed at least once in this guide. All units except the Wall Section provide Vision
  • Field can extend into water: The unit’s ability affects an area, therefore if the unit is built, moves near, travels on, hovers over, or travels beneath water, the ability can influence the nearby units
  • Field Shield: The unit has a shield that can cover an area in addition to the unit itself
  • Landed Aircraft: The unit can attack aircraft that have landed on repair pads or UEF Engineering Drones. The splash damage that is done can cause nearby ground units and shields to be damaged or destroyed
  • Limited Aircraft Units: The units cannot produce all the air units that are available to that faction
  • Limited Ground Units: The unit cannot produce all the land vehicles that are available to that faction
  • Limited Naval Vessels: The unit cannot produce all the naval vessels that are available to that faction
  • Only Other Gunships: The unit can only target other gunships or transports while in the air
  • Only when standing still: The unit can not engage its abilities when moving or attacking. It needs to stay completely still and perform no actions
  • Personal Shield: The unit has a shield that only surrounds itself
  • Personal Stealth: The unit only provides stealth for itself and not for any surrounding units
  • Same as Land Factory: The unit can produce all units that can be built in the T1-3 Land Factories of that faction
  • Same as Air Factory except for T1-3 Air Transport: The unit can produce all air units that are available to that faction except for T1-3 Air Transport
  • Self Tactical Missile Defense: The unit has a tactical missile defense that redirects the missile back to the unit that fired it
  • Surfaces: The unit will need to surface from underwater in order to engage targets
  • Switch State: The unit needs the user to select a different firing mode than the default. Some units that have a default to attack air units can be switched to attack units that are on the surface (units on land, water surface, or hovering on water surface)
  • Target Surface Above: In order to strike the target, the weapon needs to be set to attack ground and then target near or above the target. Please refer to Attack Submersibles using Attack Ground Command article for more information on how to perform this


Special Abilities Edit

Before jumping into the combat abilities or the other categories, first let us explore some abilities that are unique/not covered in the other global categories. These are as follows:

  • Amphibious (Hover on Water Surface): cross water bodies by hovering on the surface of water
  • Amphibious (Sea Bed): cross water bodies by traveling on the ground beneath water bodies
  • Amphibious (Floating): cross water bodies by floating on the surface of water
  • Build: construct new units
  • Capture: capture enemy or neutral units and make them your own
  • Capture Proof: immune to being captured
  • Crushing: inflict damage by walking on units
  • Ferry: establish an automated transport from one spot on the map to another location
  • Kamikaze/Death Explosion: inflict damage by crashing unit into enemy or upon destruction of unit releasing an area of effect explosion
  • Reclaim: reclaim wreckage, units, and map props for resources
  • Regenerates Health: unit includes built-in health regeneration ability
  • Repair/Assist: repair or assist in build/capture/reclaim/repair activities
  • Sacrifice: add instantly to a build/repair activity based on a percentage of health of sacrificing unit; sacrificed unit is lost in process
  • Submersible: surface or submerge in water
  • Teleport: instant movement to a location on the map
  • Transport: carry units to a location on the map
  • Unattackable: The unit cannot be attacked directly
  • Unrepairable: The unit cannot be repaired by other units

Intel/Counter-Intel Edit

An important dimension to battling in Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is the ability to know what your opponent is doing and hiding/sneaking your units from them. Some units have personal abilities and others can affect an area limited by its range. The table below summarizes the intelligence gathering and counter-intelligence abilities of units. The sub categories are as follows:

  • Cloak: hides unit from sight
  • Omni: reveals all forms of counter-intelligence below and above surface water
  • Radar: enemy units above or on surface of water appear as blips; if seen by vision, blip is replaced by strategic icon
  • Radar Jamming: counter-intelligence to radar by showing multiple false blips on enemy radar
  • Sonar: enemy units on or below surface of water appear as blips; if seen by water vision, blip is replaced by strategic icon
  • Sonar Stealth: counter-intelligence to sonar by eliminating sonar blip from enemy radar
  • Stealth: counter-intelligence to radar and sonar by eliminating radar and sonar blip from enemy radar and sonar
  • Vision: see enemy units on or above surface of water
  • Water Vision: see enemy units on or below surface of water

Please note that under the ‘’’Vision’’’ sub category, units that do not have a role in any other category are placed here to ensure all units are accounted for. T1 Wall Section is the only unit that provides absolutely zero intelligence or counter-intelligence abilities.

Combat Edit

Combat in Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance includes both offensive and defensive capabilities. Units that have offensive abilities can inflict damage to enemy units. Defensive abilities are units that can minimize or eliminate incoming fire from enemy units.

There are many theaters of war within Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, therefore the tables are broken down to reflect these combat theaters which are listed as follows:

  • Land
  • Air
  • Water Surface
  • Underwater
  • Hovering on Waters Surface

The tables provide the units that can attack the specified combat theater from the combat theater the unit is residing in. As an example, a T1 Tank that resides in the Land theater can be attacked from a T2 Gunship that resides in the Air theater. In addition to the offensive capabilities, the defensive capabilities for each combat theater are also presented.

There are some cases, particularly in the Underwater theater, units may have to manually be set to attack ground in order to attack units in the combat theater. There is also a COMBO: attributes where a unit needs a particular enhancement or work in tandem with another unit (e.g. ghetto gunship) to attack or defend in that combat theater.
